ways to get motivated for life

Looking for ways to get motivated? Ever have those moments where you realize you’re not actually doing what you want to do? You feel stuck, unmotivated, and maybe even depressed. Well, let me tell you there’s hope. You really can get to where you want to be—whether that’s getting a job for the first time, or becoming an entrepreneur. These strategies apply to any scenario as you get motivated for your life. So sit up, drink some water, and take notes because this article will help you get STOKED for your life!

Stay motivated by writing a letter to yourself in 3 years

Have you ever written a letter to your future self? In fact, how would your life be different now if you wrote a letter to yourself from three years ago? Would you have been more conscious of the commitment, dreams, and goals you talked to yourself about? Would you have actually taken yourself to where you wanted to be? Take some personal time to write a heartfelt note to yourself in 3 years. Talk about your dreams, your aspirations, who you want to become, and even things you want to heal.

Write a personal mission statement

A mission statement is a short paragraph that explains the goals and purposes of something, whether it be a business, a product, or a family. A personal mission statement explains your goals and purposes in life, and it is something you review frequently and live by daily. It doesn’t have to be long, but it does need to reflect your values and aspirations. What kind of a person do you want to become? How do you want people to remember you? Take time to write a personal mission statement then put it somewhere you can see everyday.

Set goals you actually want to achieve

Have you ever written goals at the beginning of a new year and then they totally flopped by February? Goals can sometimes be viewed as meaningless… but they’re truly meaningless if they’re not something you want to do. While learning a new language or riding a horse are great goals, are they things you TRULY want to do? If you say “sure” and your gut says “no,” then they’re not very realistic goals for you. Take a moment to honestly evaluate what your goals are, and then make plans to reach that goal.

Keep a vision board close by

A vision board works for visual and non-visual people… because when you put something up and see it everyday, it becomes a part of you. You can literally SEE where you want to be. A vision board can have anything that inspires you, but should include some images of the things you most want.

For example, if you want a lifestyle living on the beach or the lake, your vision board should have pictures of that. If you want to have more peace or joy, use pictures that represent those words OR just put up the words. A vision board helps get you motivated for your life because it’s that constant visual reminder that you CAN get to where you want to be!

Be kind to yourself & understand setbacks

Be gentle with yourself as complications, challenges, and obstacles WILL occur. They’re all just a fact of life. Things happen, people let us down, we fail, but know and EXPECT that these things will happen, and that it’s OK. Recognize these setbacks for what they are and give yourself permission to create opportunities from them—opportunities to grow, learn, and strengthen yourself.

Look to the past for what it is… the past

Sometimes motivation doesn’t come because you look behind. It’s like driving on the road but staring at the rear-view mirror—a recipe for disaster. You can’t get ahead if you keep looking behind. The past has happened… whatever mistakes you made, however many times you failed, however many times people let you down… YOU decide how to react to them. Are you going to let them hold you back, or will you learn from them and keep moving forward? You are the captain of your life. If you really struggle with this, ask God for help to move forward. Every step forward is STILL a step forward. 😉

Get motivated by getting an accountability partner

Whether you’re trying to lose weight or get a degree, life is so much easier (and enjoyable) when you have someone there to cheer you on. But it’s even better when they hold you accountable to your goals. When you have an accountability partner, you are much more likely to reach your goals. I know people who say they’d rather do things alone, but the truth is that we all need people. Choose someone you trust and account to them as you move towards your goals.

Write in your journal & record the journey

If you’ve kept a journal throughout your life, you know this is a no-brainer. When you look back at your life a year ago, two years ago, twenty years ago… it’s AMAZING to see the progress you’ve made. How does this help you get motivated for life? It helps you appreciate the journey and your progress, and see your challenges and obstacles in fresh perspectives. It provides you with an outlet for your thoughts and feelings. Recording your journey is also a great reminder to you once you reach your goals. It helps you feel gratitude for the journey.

Stay positive

We are constantly surrounded by negativity. When it comes to getting motivated about life, we can get overwhelmed by taking the first step towards our goals. The past, mistakes, weaknesses, and exhaustion can lead us down the spiral of negativity. Instead of going down that path, make a conscious decision to stay optimistic. And know that you can be both optimistic and realistic about things.
