This DIY Welcome Mat is definitely a keeper. It’s so easy to make and pretty inexpensive. If you want to spice up your door mat or welcome mat, here’s how to do it. We discuss what worked for us (the Cricut vinyl method), plus some tips and tricks to help you make a beautiful welcome mat for your home!
Cost of the welcome mat project
We bought the welcome mat at IKEA for about $7.99. The spray paint was about $2 from Wal-Mart. We used leftover polyurethane spray and Cricut vinyl for the rest, so it wasn’t a huge investment for us. So it’s really not bad at all!

Should I use vinyl for my door mat project?
Should I use vinyl for my door mat stencil? This was my biggest question when doing this project. I read about other people using freezer paper and other materials, but I found the vinyl worked OK. Only OK. So should I use vinyl for my door mat project?
The short answer, yes.
The long answer, don’t use transfer tape.
Keep the design simple enough that you can take the vinyl off the backing and place it straight onto the mat by hand. The word “aloha” would’ve been so much easier to place on the welcome mat if I hadn’t used transfer tape. The reason is that the vinyl doesn’t stick to the mat. Correction: it sticks on ENOUGH but the transfer tape is just an extra pain to peel away from the vinyl. Do yourself a favor and keep the design simple, then manually take the vinyl off the backing and place it yourself. 🙂
Spray painting the mat
I wondered if I had to get some sort of special paint for the welcome mat but a $2 spray paint from Walmart works just fine! And if it’s water resistant, even better! If your spray paint isn’t water resistant, go ahead and spray it with a polyurethane spray like we did.
I’ve seen other methods, like dabbing paint onto the mat but it was simply too time consuming for me, especially considering people are just going to step all over the mat! I found the spray painting method to be the easiest and quickest way!
