Do you want to create a vision for your life but aren’t sure where to get started? You’ve probably heard successful people say that they got to where they are because they have a vision.
So what is a vision? And how do you create a vision for your life?
In this article we’ll answer all those questions, as well as dig into why you should have a vision. As you work towards your dreams, goals, and future hopes, a vision will get you there faster. With self confidence and a commitment to your vision, you can do anything you set your mind to. Let’s dive right in!
What is a vision for your life?
In dictionary definition, a vision is the state of being able to see. It’s also the ability plan ahead using your imagination and wisdom. Doesn’t that sound pretty cool?
With a vision, you can see what your life now, and in the future, can look like. Wouldn’t we all love to skip into the future, to see where we end up? With a vision you can do just that!
Having a vision gives you a clear focus of what to work towards. A vision shapes the choices you make on a daily basis, and helps you navigate through opportunities, failures, ups, and downs of life.
So a vision can be whatever you need it to be. It can be a specific goal, a dream lifestyle, an idea of a finished product you’d like to create, and so forth.
From personal experience, you don’t have to know every single detail about your vision. Sometimes I don’t always know the nitty gritty details of what I want, but I have a general idea of the thing I want.
For example, my husband and I had a vision of getting a property by a lake. We wanted to build something that would bring us passive income. We didn’t know all the details, like we didn’t know which lake or what we’d build on it, but we did know that we wanted a house by a lake. That vision came to life as we looked around and kept an open mind.
So don’t worry too much about the details, but have something in place that you can definitely work with.

Why should you have a vision for your life?
It’s easy to feel aimless and purposeless in this life. Without a vision, there’s no direction.
Many communities, churches, and families function well when they have a vision, because everyone has the same goal, the same hope. The vision might not look exactly the same in everyone’s mind, but there’s a common idea bonding these people together.
That bond can translate into other relationships in your life, including the relationship with your spouse, employee, employer, and so forth. Having a vision not only helps you know what to focus on, but others as well.
You won’t always share the same vision as others. For example, in your own personal life, you should have your own vision. Do you want to become an influencer and travel? Sure! What will you do to make that vision a reality?
Do you want to start a humanitarian cause? It’s totally possible! How can you get those goals and dreams in motion?
A vision gives you direction
Having a vision is like being on a train. Though the train has optional detours and tracks it can go on, it remains focused on the destination it needs to go.
Without a vision, it’s like driving a car. You have too many options, distractions, and things to pay attention to. Other people can get in your way, cut you off, or distract you. There are endless options of where you can go.
When you have a vision, you have a focus, something to work towards.
As an example, my husband and I have always had vision. We like to look ahead 5-10 years and ask ourselves where we want to be. These visualization exercises have proven successful, as we write specific dreams and goals, then make plans to make it happen.
Other people have criticized us before, and said unkind things but don’t listen to them. The majority of people do not have a vision, which is why they’re critical of you.
